Course Summary

This is a Level 3 Designated Safeguarding Lead course for Child safeguarding within the practice. You should already have completed the level 2 modules in order to get the best out of this course.

It will guide you through the expectations of being the safeguarding lead with regards to children, the reporting procedures and your responsibilities within the team. This includes, policies, procedures, training and reporting.

Jo Russell RDN Cert DPM Cert Ed MSET LCGI

Jo has over 30 years’ experience in the dental profession. Having successfully performed a number of roles within the practice, she has acquired a large amount of expertise in the dental field. She has a proven track record in Practice and Area Management, overseeing a large group of practices in London and the South.

As a result of her experience Jo saw the need for assisting clinicians in giving their businesses a fresh perspective on Practice Management, Compliance and Procedures.

By the end of the session the learner will better know the role and responsibilities of the Designated Safeguarding Lead

Aims & Objectives

• To be able to safeguard the children in our care and appropriately share information with the relevant people to better look after children and young people
• Know your roles and responsibilities as the Designated Safeguarding Lead
• Identify the difference between Safeguarding and Child Protection
• Embed a culture of safeguarding in your practice
• Know the legislative and statutory guidance for dentistry
• Respond appropriately if a concern is identified
• Know how to make a good referral. Recognise when and if it’s appropriate to share information and with whom and how to record and store information.

Development Outcomes

A. Effective communication with patients, the dental team, and others across dentistry, including when obtaining consent, dealing with complaints, and raising concerns when patients are at risk

B. Effective management of self, and effective management of others or effective work with others in the dental team, in the interests of patients at all times; providing constructive leadership where appropriate

C. Maintenance and development of knowledge and skill within your field of practice
